Background of the Study

Social engineering attacks, which manipulate individuals into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security, are a significant threat to the networks of higher education institutions. Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State, has witnessed an increase in social engineering attempts targeting both staff and students, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data and compromised network security. Social engineering tactics, such as phishing, pretexting, baiting, and tailgating, exploit human psychology rather than technical vulnerabilities, making them difficult to prevent with conventional cybersecurity measures (Imran et al., 2023).

While technical defenses like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption play a role in securing campus networks, the human element remains a critical vulnerability. Recent studies have highlighted that the success rate of social engineering attacks is high because individuals, particularly those within academic environments, may not be adequately trained to recognize these deceptive techniques (Ayinde et al., 2024). This study investigates the prevalence and impact of social engineering attacks at Federal University, Gusau, and aims to assess the effectiveness of existing security measures in protecting the campus network.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Gusau, has become increasingly vulnerable to social engineering attacks due to a lack of awareness and training among students and staff members regarding these threats. Although traditional security measures are in place, the lack of effective human-targeted defenses has led to breaches of sensitive university data. This research aims to analyze the nature of these attacks and propose preventive measures that can enhance awareness and reduce the risk of falling victim to such attacks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence and types of social engineering attacks targeting campus networks at Federal University, Gusau.

  2. To analyze the vulnerabilities in the university's current cybersecurity framework that enable the success of social engineering attacks.

  3. To develop and recommend effective security awareness programs to mitigate the risks of social engineering attacks on the university's network.

Research Questions

  1. What types of social engineering attacks are most common in campus networks at Federal University, Gusau?

  2. How effective are the current security measures at Federal University in preventing social engineering attacks?

  3. What security awareness strategies can reduce the risk of social engineering attacks among students and staff at the university?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the vulnerabilities that social engineering attacks exploit within campus networks. By identifying these weaknesses and suggesting awareness programs, the research aims to improve the cybersecurity posture of Federal University, Gusau, and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to social engineering attacks targeting Federal University, Gusau's campus network. It does not address other cybersecurity threats or focus on institutions outside the university.

Definitions of Terms

  • Social Engineering: Psychological manipulation of individuals to perform actions or disclose confidential information that compromises security.

  • Phishing: A type of social engineering attack where attackers impersonate legitimate entities to steal sensitive information.

  • Campus Network: The interconnected network of systems and devices within the university's premises that enables communication and access to resources.
